EXT3 for my PS3!

January 17, 2008 Posted by mitch | media, ps3 | 0 Comments

First, this is kind of a rant, I know people have complained about it on the playstation.com forums, but the fact remains... Currently it seems the PS3 only supports FAT32 as a file system on removable drives, which we all know that FAT32 has a file size limitation of 2GB4GB*. So some of my video rips(of DVD's I OWN and DO NOT PIRATE!) to MP4 (with full audio) come in around 2.3-2.72.9 GB. The audio quality actually seems better than when I play them off the DVD in this format, and the video quality seems to remain the same. I rather like the idea of not needing to shuffle and access DVD's when I want to watch a movie, also, when I do have kids, I don't want them man handling the DVD's and making them unreadable... something simple that can access a media file off a central server in my home network seems to be a much better option.

Anyway, this brings me to the brunt of my rant... I don't believe the license would prohibit Sony from including EXT3 support in a firmware update, and I say EXT3 simply because it would be the easiest, from a license prospective. I don't think HFS+ is open (tho I know Linux has atleast basic support for it) and NTFS I know isn't. And there are already drivers for MacOS and Windows for EXT3. I'd be fine if it was included but not officially supported file format... Just as long as it works.

* Update *
As someone rudely pointed out by calling me an ass that Fat32 can do a 4GB file instead of the 2GB I had mentioned earlier. Depending on if MS wants to get legal with their precious IP litigation again, another filesystem would be much preferred.

Bought a PS3

October 15, 2007 Posted by mitch | ps3 | 0 Comments

Well, its been a long time since I last posted, and its also been a while since I bought my PS3... Not related.. But I must say I have been enjoying the PS3, its such an amazing piece of hardware. The picture quality is truly superb, and the sound output seems to be much better than my upscaling DVD player. Even tho they both do HDMI to my TV which is then pushed through the optical audio out to my receiver. The only thing I would like to really complain about is the lack of interesting games. I don't have hours to spend playing video games like a kid typically would... and Motorstorm is way to hard after the third or forth race than I'm willing to put up with. However, the game demos you can download from the online store are nice and thats what prompted me to buy Resistance. Which is currently my favorite game (out of the two i actually own). So.. take that for what its worth... I will be buying DiRT soon, and I hear a that a new Need For Speed will be coming out at the end of the month. That should be exciting I hope.

And wow... thats quite the run on blab of nothing... sorry for not being very articulate.
