I love it... Or maybe I've finally gone crazy...

I don't know if I can stand it....  I mean the comments on this right wing blog are absurd... really... Glenn Beck is so full of shit I can't even stand it.  How do I know its that douchebags fault?  Well.. because the comments reflect the shit he says.  Suddenly Government regulation for "net-neutrality" via the FCC is "socialism"..... Yet under Bush, the FCC was tasked with cleaning up TV and Radio?  Yet, that seemed to be taken very well by most of the right winger's?  Explain that one?  I can't... its sensor ship... the very thing they're afraid of the most when it comes to the internet and their first amendment rights being taken... because them "Libtards" control the FCC... You do realize that your ignorance is very blatant when it comes to this issue right?  I mean... you honestly only parrot the likes of the guy that started the argument to begin with... AT&T's CEO?  yeah... your all about Big Corps Capitalism aren't you... guess who looses in that?  You... you asshat.

OSPF on Juniper EX4200 Switches

August 1, 2010 Posted by mitch | juniper, networking | 0 Comments

At work, I had a situation arrive where I have two buildings connected together with Metro Optical Ethernet. There are two lines, one 100Mbit Ethernet line through Utopia and another 200Mbit Ethernet line through Qwest. I initially had a simple /30 subnet static route accross each line, with preferences as to which line to use. However... since these lines have optical to ethernet devices on each end... the only way my simple static route would fail over was if those devices lost power and shut down the link between them and my switches. So something a little more redundant that would check the actual connectivity of the lines was needed.

Enter OSPF, I had decided on using OSPF to enable dynamic routing for these networks. I will past show the relavent bits of my code here for future reference. From my hub switch (main switch... with default route connected)

policy-options {
    policy-statement export_default_route_into_ospf {
        from term1
            from {
                route-filter 0.0.0.0/0 exact;
            }
            then accept;
         }
         term term2 {
            then reject;
         }
    }
}
protocols {
    ospf {
        export export_default_route_into_ospf;
        area 0.0.0.0 {
            interface ge-0/0/1.0 {
                metric 10;
            }
            interface ge-1/0/1.0 {
               metric 20;
            }
    }
}
From the spoke switch:
protocols {
    ospf {
        area 0.0.0.0 {
            interface ge-0/0/1.0 {
                metric 10;
            }
            interface ge-1/0/1.0 {
                metric 20;
            }
            interface vlan.101 {
                passive;
            }
            interface vlan.102 {
                passive;
            }
        }
    }
}
For simplicity's sake, interface ge-0/0/1.0 is connected to the same interface on the other switch stack... But that should be the whole config... each vlan on the spoke side, needs to be added to the same ospf area to be advertised to the other side. After adding this... i was able to remove my static routes and everything has worked fine since. I've even had problems with the line since then... it failed over with out much trouble. I didn't even get a call about it.

Goodbye moto, I'm done

July 28, 2010 Posted by mitch | android, cliq, HTC, Motorola | 0 Comments

I've read about my last delay for Cliq updates. It seems your only really worried about selling new phones and not supporting the users that bought your other phones. Considering the Droid X already has 2.1 with the infamous MotoBlur interface... whats taking so long for the Cliq? I can say that the HTC Vision looks mighty tempting considering my Cliq is approaching 1 year old and not a single android update! NOT ONE! It had an old android release on it when it was released, and its a dinosaur now. So... as a customer... Moto, you lost me.

Time to try fedora again?

July 16, 2010 Posted by mitch | fedora, ubuntu | 0 Comments

Its been almost 5 years since I last used fedora... especially on my desktop... I've become jadded by the age of RHEL/CentOS and the lack of up-to-date software packages which pushed me to Ubuntu... however... the latest releases of Fedora look intriguing. That paired with my latest projects at work and the sheer cool factor of func and how much easier it would make things... I probably will need to give it a try...

Programming

June 15, 2010 Posted by mitch | programming, thoughts, web-development, work | 0 Comments

I've been stressed lately... about work and such... mostly because I'm a sysadmin/network admin as my day job atleast.... but... because I understand programming... and that I enjoy it on a very small scale... and I have my opinions on whats good and what isn't... I've somehow been given responsibilities of being a programmer? I'm supposed to write code to make the pieces of things I'm in charge of work... which... when its just me or even a few other guys that will be using said code... i'm ok with... but lately... Its been about me writing a web app for FTP.... managing FTP users in a database... which that part is done... and its fine... but really there needs to be a decent non standard SFTP server that can pull from the same database... and also needs the ability to do random one off transfers... so we don't need to fill the database up with thousands of user accounts that are used once and never touched again. Which again... all that... in and of itself isn't that big of a deal... only I really suck at front end work... I mean... look at this site? most of what is here... has been ripped from something else... I kinda picked the colors.... but even that was with some help... they layout... just search for CSS Layouts and find a three column blog style... and you'll probably find what I'm using... I'm not that good at front end work... so... I guess thats where my big hangup is... if I could get someone to write the frontends to my apps... and it wasn't costing me anything... i'd be all for it... need a yin to my yang so to speak... backend stuff I'm good at figuring out... making that look good.... HORRIBLE

net neutrality and its meaning

May 18, 2010 Posted by mitch | glenn-beck, net-neutrality, politics | 0 Comments

I'm disturbed to see some of the crap Glenn Beck has been spouting lately... I swore I'd stop writing about politics... but man... This guy can distort facts like theres no tomorrow (and thats exactly the argument he makes alot of times...) I mean... hes arguing that the FCC trying to setup Net Neutrality ie: a Neutral Internet. As in an ISP is Neutral to the traffic that passes over them... and saying this is a way of "silencing the Right" ????? REALLY!?!? WTF!?! I mean... you people that listen to him, make an argument and will say that you're "smart people".... but really? This guy is saying a black pot is a white pot... He's given you an argument that you want to keep the internet as it is.... well... except for the last oh maybe 2-3 years... the Internet HAS BEEN Neutral! ie: Net Neutraliy is what you want if you want to "keep it as it is". The reason the discussion about creating laws and regulation around it has come up... is because the likes of the AT&T CEO was wanting to charge customers and providers for the right to use their network... thats right... going and coming... thats like paying to get on the toll road... and paying to get off... on the same trip! Which is wrong... why must you defend this sell out of a man... hes nothing but a Shill for big Corps as they are the only ones against Net Neutrality!

Kick-Ass - I liked it.

I'm not one to read comics or anything, so, I loved the movie. I've read complaints that some of the movies coming out based on comic books suck because they deviate so much from the comic book.. (or books for that matter... aka Harry Potter, Twilight ect... ) I just don't care. Yes they're "based" on them, but honestly... things that work well in a book don't work well on the big screen.... and vice versa actually... a book written about a unique movie... would suck equally. As for the movie Kick-Ass, I liked it.

I hate monitoring software

April 12, 2010 Posted by mitch | django, hyperic, monitoring, python, twisted, zenoss | 0 Comments

I've been installing a few monitoring solutions... zenoss, hyperic and others... but initial impressions on all of them are lacking... I mean... they're overly complicated, Monitoring and graphing is easy... and having a base setup out of the box isn't to much to ask I don't think... I want something like cloudkick. Simple, elegant... yet appears to be sufficiently flexible. What more could you want? I would say however, I'm fairly disappointed that its a service mostly... means I'm probably not going to use it at all... and maybe if my boss feels sufficiently giving...he'll invest some money and we'll write our own... Bonus part? Looking at their careers section... python, django, twisted... seems they read my mind... thats the tools I would have used to build one...

In need of a good open source monitoring and trending solution

April 10, 2010 Posted by mitch | cacti, hyperic, monitoring, nagios, pandora, zenoss | 0 Comments

I'm in need of a good monitoring and trending solution... I don't really want to pay for something as they all generally are lacking in one area or another, so the ability to extend on my own is much preferred. I've been using nagios and Cacti and for what they are... they're quite good... however, I want something that does what they both do... in one. I have a few options I've looked at and installed... Zenoss looks awesome however... it just seems complicated from the start... didn't see any quick wizard or even a usable default setup. Just seems like alot of learning and study from the start... if I don't want to do that... none of my co-workers are going to either... and if I do... It will still be very difficult to explain and be usable for everyone else... I'd rather not... they seem to think nagios and cacti are difficult enough... cacti is fairly... but that's only if you really dig into it... the base setup after initially configured... is quite easy. Anyway, Hyperic, Pandora FMS, and maybe a few others are next on my list to checkout... any others?

New Site Design AND new backend

March 11, 2010 Posted by mitch | django, python, website | 0 Comments

I FINALLY DID IT! can you believe it... I've been saying it for ever... but I finally got some free time at work to work on it... and... its still a work in progress... style sheets need to be finished... some other code needs to be done... I need to bring back my photo albums... which will be new and improved... but... its running django... and my own custom blog app. It seems a little slow to me with me so I'll work on some tuning options, but it runs fast on my laptop... My laptop is quite a bit more powerful than this vhost.... I've disable php from my server!

Their agenda clear now?

February 16, 2010 Posted by mitch | media, politics | 0 Comments

So, the opinion show of Fox and Friends. Has decided to discuss some unnamed study that going to 4 years of college makes you more liberal. They are saying its because professors are pushing their own liberal bias and that schools employ only liberal professors, and this translates into them rubbing off and being a bit more liberal. And to quote... they ask "How do with fix this?" !?!? First of all... I'm a little put back at the boldness of the statements they were making in the video. I mean... It says a lot about what they really want. They're saying that people shouldn't go to college because you'll become a dumb liberal? Uhm... I'm sure that's why... or maybe they're using that as a reason to keep you from going to school and actually learning something... learning critical thinking? Learning how logic works... learning how if a=b and b=c, then a=c EVERY TIME! Learn to develop your own opinion, and be exposed to many different cultures and people, because government funded schools are required to admit an ethnically diverse student body. In fact it sounds to me like they like to keep their audience uneducated and dumb... so they'll believe and act solely on the agenda they put forth. I mean... the proles were an excellent work force, keeping the party in power and able to do whatever they wanted. They just needed to throw a bone or two every now and again. I have to say... I think our education system is failing... on the basis that at the very minimum, high schools should be teaching Critical Thinking and Ethics classes at least in 10th grade.
