To switch my blog software or not

January 27, 2008 Posted by mitch | django, python, website | 1 Comment

I've been using wordpress now for a couple years, and while I don't have any major complaints against it... I think I'd just like "more". Or... maybe I just need to take advantage of the features it has... however... the whole slashdot/digg effect flooding out wordpress servers... not that I think I'll ever get slash dotted, but... what can I say... i'm a geek and I like to tinker occasionally. Currently my biggest reason for not doing anything, is I'd have to rewrite a whole new theme... I spent a good couple hours doing the one I have and I just don't know where I'd find the time to do it again...

So... I guess I wouldn't expect it any time soon.. however i may get bored or suddenly have an urge and alot of time on my hands so you never know... I did come home with a new car last week...

New CAR!

Well...I did it... I went to the car show yesterday... and saw all the new cars... and from my previous posts... you can tell I like hatchbacks. I also have an affinity for all-wheel drive, which up until the 2008 model year... left me with a VW or Audi to meet those two likes of mine. However, since I've owned a couple honda's (both bikes, and cars) and a Nissan Maxima, all of which I haven't had problems with... the maintenance of these German vehicles had me a little on edge, and with the prospect of having a 20k+ car thats a good sized payment, to go along with the upkeep. Then Subaru does something they said they wouldn't... they release a 5 door hatchback. Seeing it in pictures didn't give it justice, and seeing it in person at the car show made me want to go see if the Subaru dealer had any used STi's on their lot... (I know that doesn't make sense... since i liked the hatchback n all...) But I traded in the Civic and leased a Impreza WRX Hatchback for what a used STi would have cost... and I much prefer the hatchback over the sedan anyway.

Over all, its got some power... much more than the Civic and I really love the look.

What do you think?Black 2008 Impreza Hatchback

EXT3 for my PS3!

January 17, 2008 Posted by mitch | media, ps3 | 0 Comments

First, this is kind of a rant, I know people have complained about it on the playstation.com forums, but the fact remains... Currently it seems the PS3 only supports FAT32 as a file system on removable drives, which we all know that FAT32 has a file size limitation of 2GB4GB*. So some of my video rips(of DVD's I OWN and DO NOT PIRATE!) to MP4 (with full audio) come in around 2.3-2.72.9 GB. The audio quality actually seems better than when I play them off the DVD in this format, and the video quality seems to remain the same. I rather like the idea of not needing to shuffle and access DVD's when I want to watch a movie, also, when I do have kids, I don't want them man handling the DVD's and making them unreadable... something simple that can access a media file off a central server in my home network seems to be a much better option.

Anyway, this brings me to the brunt of my rant... I don't believe the license would prohibit Sony from including EXT3 support in a firmware update, and I say EXT3 simply because it would be the easiest, from a license prospective. I don't think HFS+ is open (tho I know Linux has atleast basic support for it) and NTFS I know isn't. And there are already drivers for MacOS and Windows for EXT3. I'd be fine if it was included but not officially supported file format... Just as long as it works.

* Update *
As someone rudely pointed out by calling me an ass that Fat32 can do a 4GB file instead of the 2GB I had mentioned earlier. Depending on if MS wants to get legal with their precious IP litigation again, another filesystem would be much preferred.

first post of the new year

January 14, 2008 Posted by mitch | life | 747 Comments

wow... 14 days into the year and this is my first post... starting the year out like i treated all last year... Anyway... lots going on currently... I have school and I'm contemplating weather I'm going to transfer to a new school now or wait until after I graduate with my Associates...

I'm also thinking about a new car again... and I'm back and forth (as you can probably see from previous posts) over which car I want... The only things that have remained true are that I'm favouring cars with all wheel drive and a turbo is always cool... So.. this leads me to what I'm currently thinking... I'm thinking I can currently afford a Subaru Impreza WRX STi. So... we'll see.. probably won't get any prior notification about me buying it, as it'll probably be like when I bought my bike... however... me buying an STi... will probably also result in me selling the bike :( as much as I love it... I find I just don't have the kind of time to ride it like I did when I was single... Also with my work schedule I hate sitting in traffic on it... it just seems like a waste to have it cooped up in traffic.

Also... probably going to happen before the STi, is getting some yard work done on the new house... including fixing my flooding basement problems... and getting the backyard with grass and such. So work can begin on the basement and upstairs... fun stuff...
