Internet Explorer's LACK of standards

July 29, 2004 Posted by mitch | internet, technology | 0 Comments

It has just come to my attention that my website here doesn't render correctly in the latest version of IE... (on XP atleast). And, all I can say is... get a decent browser. I mean, with all the security problems with the browser AND its lack of support for even the basic standards (full CSS1 comes to mind), and on top of it, Microsoft thought it would throw in a couple of non standard stuff that it can use as well. Its horrible. Sure, i know, windows users don't care because "everything just works for me". But the web is suppose to be a medium where it doesn't matter what OS, or browser, or anything else your using. The experience is supposed to be the same for everyone. Hence why standards are important. Last I checked, this site renders fully compliant with standards, except for my news feeds.... which I will be fixing as soon as I get around to it...

Paintball

July 28, 2004 Posted by mitch | life | 0 Comments

Saturday I went paintballing with my brothers saturday. It was a lot of fun. We didn't get to play alot because I had a family barbaque to be to at 6pm, so we only got like an hour and a half in or so. However, I'm planning on going back down thursday night to play some more. I really need to go get some cammo pants however, and a darker grubby shirt i can wear that won't matter.

The Bourne Supremacy

July 24, 2004 Posted by mitch | movies | 0 Comments

I saw it yesterday, I got off work a bit early because I had to stay up last night upgrading an internal DNS server. So I went over to the theater in the mall and watched it. All in all I liked it. I had read a couple reviews before I saw it, and some were saying it lacked in the plot so you knew where it was going. Which, to some degree I agree with. There was only one real plot twist, if you could call it that. However, I still liked the movie. It brings back childhood fantasies of wanting to be a secret agent(you know how kids are)... I've always enjoyed a good spy movie. They're always my favorites. I think I just might go out and buy the third book The Bourne Ultimatum. It looks interesting and I probably will enjoy it. My delema is, I'm not sure exactly what the movies left out. So I'd probably be better off to read all three.

Eyewitness Reports from the DaimlerChrysler Hearing - SCO Trounced

July 21, 2004 Posted by mitch | legal, linux | 0 Comments

DaimlerChrysler Hearing was today. SCO lost on all counts except their complaint that DC took longer than 30 days to certify that they did not have any of SCO code on ANY of their servers... in use or just sitting on a file server... Well, FINALLY some of the air has been let out of their big heads. Hopefully this is the begining of the end. (I know its all going to end eventually, but sooner is better than later... because I'm really tired of hearing the crap that comes out of SCO..)

I'm an UNCLE!

July 17, 2004 Posted by mitch | life | 0 Comments

my sister had a baby girl last monday, July 11th around 7:45?pm. She was 7lb. 1oz. and 19 inches long. I finally got a chance to go over and see her yesterday. My wife has been giving me a hard time about holding babies. She always makes me hold them when someone we know has a baby and we're visiting. I'm not really sure what it is... maybe it's because I'm scared I'm going to hurt them so I don't want to hold them. I want kids someday, I'm just not sure if right now is the best time. My wife gets fustrated with me at times about it, but I really don't know what to say... I mean, kids... I see it as a HUGE responcibility... And I really want to be a good father to my children, I'm just scared because... it could happen at any time i guess...

Web Site Updates

July 17, 2004 Posted by mitch | website | 0 Comments

I've been meaning to make some updates for a while... I finally got to it today. If you click to make a comment on the post, you'll notice it actually has formating now instead of just being thrown on the page. I'm not saying that its finished by any means, as I'm not really in a creative mood. However, it has needed the update. Enjoy.

DHCP 2 mysql script

July 13, 2004 Posted by mitch | projects, work | 0 Comments

I've almost finished a script to dump the data from dhcp leases to mysql at work. I just have the database part to finish which I should be able to get to tomarrow hopefully. Anyway, I will post it when I finish it. I'm not promising anything pretty... infact its actually REALLY ugly. Anyway, I will post it none the less. Guess its time I get a projects page up eh?

I have Internet access!!!!

July 11, 2004 Posted by mitch | internet | 0 Comments

Man... not having internet access was driving me nuts. Comcast was scheduled to come today between 1pm and 4pm, I got a call from one of their techs at around 3:30pm saying he was running about 2 hours behind. So he said he should be here by 6pm. Well, 7:45pm came and my wife and I got tired of waiting because we had other things to do... and had now been waiting around all day for him. I called him, he said to call their office and maybe get reschedualed for another time, because he didn't think he'd make it out today. So I called, and the lady on the other end seemed concerned and said it shouldn't be happening, so she called the guy that was supposed to be comming to install ours, and told him to get over right now. So he left the job he was currently working on (and had been working on for the last couple hours anyway). And he had ours setup within 30 minutes. I wasn't asking questions while he was setting it up, and he couldn't get it to work on my gentoo linux box right away. So I grabed my laptop from work and he used that to get it setup. Went without a problem. After he left however, I tried to get my gentoo box back on it. Wasn't working... my gentoo box would no longer get an IP from their dhcp server, and I didn't know exactly why. I looked around on the net a bit and found out exactly what was happening and why he wanted to use the windows box. But, turns out the problem was very simple. I only needed to unplug the power from the cable modem and then plug it back in. My gentoo box grabed an IP immediately. First thing I did was download emails and run an emerge sync && emerge -u --deep world. And I'm noticing a big difference over Ygnition's "T1" we had at our old appartment. I really don't think they had a T1, or they had it capped on the bandwidth each user could use... Anyway, so far so good.

As for Comcast's service. I didn't like the wait (had to wait about a week and a half for the install) but they said it would be done today, and they did all they could to make sure it was done today. Which I appreciate. I mean... the internet has been a part of my life for years, I don't think I've been this long with out it at home for years... almost went insane.... good thing I have internet at work, or i would have :)

Internet access at home

July 8, 2004 Posted by mitch | internet, life | 0 Comments

Comcast is supposed to be comming out on Saturday... being without internet has been killing me... don't quite feel like my self. I mean, I have internet at work and all... but I feel guilty for using it for personal stuff while I'm working. So I don't do alot of browsing while at work. Anyway, i'm going through withdrawals quite honestly... I mean, I've been on call this week for work, and we have this sprint wireless card... works like a cell phone to the internet... anyway, I haven't used a modem in more than 5 years... its now killing me to attempt at using this... its HORRIBLE... i don't know how anyone can stand dialup anymore. But I guess if its all you know... its not so bad. however... I CAN'T WAIT...

What a week and its not over

July 6, 2004 Posted by mitch | life | 0 Comments

Well... ok... we just got home with our new car right... and a kid from the complex comes screaming up the hill from behind the appartments yelling "BIG FIRE, CALL 911, FIRE!!!" at first my wife and I thought he was kidding... but then I realized no kid can act as histerical as he is. So I called 911 while walking back behind the appartments to see a ton of smoke billowing up from behind a mound of dirt that blocks our appartment complex from a field and the Jordan River. Well they had lit a firework that had started a fire in the field. Anyone that says the fire department doesn't get here fast doesn't know what they're talking about. They were here within 5 minutes for us. Anyway, I don't believe any damage was done to any buildings but, it burned atleast 3 acers. It will be on the news tonight. What a week, what a week.

New Car!!!

July 6, 2004 Posted by mitch | accord | 0 Comments

My wife and I went car shopping yesterday, and found a really nice 98 Honda Accord EX V6 for $9,800. We took it for a test drive, and it was perfect. The interior (leather) looked brand new. The reason its as cheap as it is, is because it has 109,000 miles on it. But its a Honda, its had its belts changed. and it looks extremely clean. I just found out that it had one owner before as well. The carpets are extremely clean, it really looks like its almost brand new. So we are going to be picking it up today.

Moving Pains

July 4, 2004 Posted by mitch | house | 0 Comments

I never would have thought that we had so much stuff.... Since we had to move it all... it supprised me. We've collected alot over the last year of being married. Man... the good part I guess is that most of it is neeeded, we might only have been able to cut a couple boxes out if we would have really gone through it and thrown away stuff we didn't need. I guess another part of it was cloths and shoes we have... alot of which we don't wear. Main problem with that however is that they don't fit anymore... the hole weight thing after you get married.... yeah, I haven't been to happy about it. Anyway, I'm going to be hitting the club house every morning hopefully starting tomarrow. I would have to adjust my sleeping habits.

Car Accident

July 4, 2004 Posted by mitch | life | 0 Comments

My wife and I got a call yesterday, my sister in law, Lindsey, who has been staying with us for the past couple weeks, was in an accident. She was rearended by another car which sent her into the car ahead of her, which then hit the car ahead of it. Damage wasn't bad to the other cars involved only ours and the car (a Chrysler LeBaron) that hit ours. Both will probably be totaled by the Insurance Companies. Both air bags deployed in our car, Lindsey, thankfully, is ok. However, I do believe the frame on our old 1998 Dodge Neon is bent. As doors were hard to open, and the dash has cracks in it, along with all of the air vents and buttons poped out of it. I'm almost certain they will be totalling it, as I believe just replacing bumpers and reloading/replacing the air bags and windows alone will be well over what its worth. Anyway, the most important thing is that everyone involved appeared to be ok. We just get to start looking at replacing the car sooner than we would have expected...

Without internet at home

July 2, 2004 Posted by mitch | house | 0 Comments

Atleast I have it at work.

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of your world.
